San Jose Family Photography – What to wear for family photos – Photos by Kim E
One of the common tips for what to wear for family photos is coordinating, not matching. What does that mean?
If you think back to the days of portrait family photography, you’ll remember the era of black shirts and jeans or white shirts with khaki pants, right?! Many might think it’s a timeless look however, there’s a reason why I suggest families steer away from that.
When taking family photos and everyone is wearing the same thing, everyone ends up looking blobby. Everyone blends into each other and there is a lack of depth with the people in the images.
With your photos, you want to stand out. You want depth and to show the personalities of each person. Your eye wanders to each person in the photograph and you, plus your family photos, stand out!
For inspiration, you can start on Pinterest and start with a color palette that you enjoy. You’ll find a lot of resources of outfits to consider and color palettes as well. Piece together your outfits lay them out all on the ground/bed and take a picture to send over. That helps narrow down ideas but also, allows your kiddos to be involved too. Kids should be involved because you don’t want to deal with tantrums or itchy sweater syndrome on the day of the session.
Hope this helps with what to wear for family photos!
