Tips for a Family Photo Session with Grown Kids

I absolutely love getting to know families and especially, getting to figure out how I’m going to make a family photo session extra fun with grown kids. There are lots of different tricks and tips that photographers use when it comes to photographing babies, toddlers, kids, and even grown kids. Here are some my favorite tips for a family photo session with grown kids 🙂

  • Get to know each family before photographing them. Ask questions about them, figure out what makes them laugh, or try to be cringey and say awkward trendy things
  • Talk directly to them, remind them that they’re doing something awesome for their family, thank them and then make a bad joke to get them to warm up
  • A small tidbit like knowing they enjoy biking, suggest bringing along bikes to do something a bit different
  • Tell them how awesome they’re doing. Show them the back of your camera. Have them assist you with a polaroid camera so they get instant gratification on seeing images
  • Ask the parents to snuggle up, lean into each other, look into each other’s eyes and wait for the kids to be goofy in the background
  • Let them be kids, they’re just grown kids who are still kids at heart and being silly still works

For this family, I knew that they enjoyed bike rides so we decided to load up their cars, head to the Stanford Cactus Garden for bike photos. They then biked slowly to Cantor Arts Center so they could take extra fun photos with the sculptures. They loved knowing that they could be silly with the sculptures!

Are you ready for your own family photo session with grown kids? Next time they’re planning on visiting and staying with you, think about taking some time to get family photos in to show how love and fun you still have.
