Bay Area Family Photographer – Tips on making family photos fun for kids
Family photos are a great way to capture memories and create lasting traditions. But getting kids to sit still and smile for the camera can be a challenge. Here are a few tips for making family photos fun for kids during our session:
- Choose a location that kids will love. If you’re shooting outdoors, pick a park, playground, or other place where kids can run around and burn off some energy. If you’re shooting indoors, choose a room with plenty of space for kids to play.
- Get creative with your poses. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your poses. Kids will be more likely to cooperate if they’re having fun, like climbing or jumping.
- Bring along some props. Props can help to break the ice and make kids more comfortable in front of the camera. For me, I bring along an Instax camera and an old camera that they can use to help me photograph.
- Make it a game. Turn family photos into a game by giving kids a challenge. Who can help lead the family on a treasure hunt or question games like who makes the best faces/best jumps/smelliest farts always helps bring out the smiles.
- Be patient. It takes time to get kids used to being in front of the camera so being patient helps with them opening. Sometimes it takes a long time for them to open up so being patient will always help warm up.
Here are some additional tips for making family photos fun for kids before our session:
- Let kids choose their own clothes. Kids are more likely to be happy and cooperative if they feel comfortable in their clothes. Let them choose their own outfits so that they can feel their best. If they’re determined to bring along a costume, bring it along and save it for the end of the session.
- Bring along snacks and drinks. Kids get hungry and thirsty quickly, so make sure to include this in the bag.
- Take breaks. If kids start to get restless, take a break. Let them run around and play for a few minutes before getting back to the photos.
- Have fun! Family photos should be a fun experience for everyone involved. So relax, have fun, and enjoy the time with your family
