My kids know when I’m heading off to work because I’m wearing my “uniform”. Usually, it’s a white shirt, semi-white pants, and if it’s chilly, a white sweater. I don’t wear white pants because I know I will get my bum dirty. Now my outfit choice may seem bland but there’s a reason for wearing white clothing for photographers.
This small detail of wearing white adds a bit of light to not only the subject but also, as a catch light in their eyes.
White clothing acts as a reflective surface so it helps to bounce light onto the subject in a soft, flattering manner. Plus when I wear the white fabric, it reflects light onto the subject’s face, so it acts as a natural fill light and a catch light in the eyes. Sometimes you can even see me in their eyes, cool right?
So, the next time you see me wearing all the bright whites, you know I’m heading off to a session 🙂
